As promised, the Linux Mint team has pushed the Beta release of the upcoming and highly anticipated Linux Mint 18 "Sarah" operating system to the official testing channels for public beta testers.

Clement Lefebvre, the leader of the Linux Mint project, reported a few days ago that the Linux Mint 18 Beta builds were almost ready for deployment and that they would land for public testing before the week's end. So here they are, you can download them via the links at the end of the article.

Both Cinnamon and MATE editions of the Linux Mint 18 Beta release are available for testing, each one with two Live ISO images, for 64-bit and 32-bit computers. While Linux Mint 18 Beta Cinnamon Edition comes with the Cinnamon 3.0 desktop environment, the MATE Edition is built around the MATE 1.14 desktop environment.

Final Linux Mint 18 "Sarah" release coming next month

The development cycle of the Linux Mint 18 "Sarah" operating system started a while ago, and it has been under heavy internal testing for the past two weeks. Therefore, the community can only now get their hands on the approved Beta ISO images, which they can test on their personal computer and report bugs.

The final release of Linux Mint 18 "Sarah" is coming in the next few weeks, most probably in the first half of July, but not before we, the community, are able to test-drive the Release Candidate (RC) images as well. Linux Mint 18 will be based on the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system.

This means that it will inherit most of its core components, including the long-term supported (LTS) Linux 4.4 kernel. However, Linux Mint 18 "Sarah" will bring an optional new look and feel based on the popular Arc GTK theme and the Moka icons, which you can see in our Linux Mint 18 Beta Cinnamon and Linux Mint 18 MATE screenshot tours.

You can download Linux Mint 18 Beta Cinnamon and MATE editions right now via our website, but please try to keep in mind that these are pre-release versions of the upcoming computer operating system, which means that some known issues that have been highlighted by the Linux Mint team in the official release notes are present.
