Today, December 15, 2016, Clement Lefebvre, the leader of Linux Mint, published a new edition of the project's monthly newsletter for the month of December 2016, informing users of the Ubuntu-based operating system about some of the latest developments.

And the good news starts with the fact that the wait is almost over for the Linux Mint 18.1 "Serena" Cinnamon and MATE editions, which should hit the streets by the end of the week, but not before the upgrade path from the previous release, Linux Mint 18 "Sarah," is in place and ready to take users to the next major version of the popular GNU/Linux distribution.

"Many thanks for your donations and for your support and special thanks to all the people who helped us test the Beta. Now let’s see what’s in our Christmas bag to kick off the holiday season," said Clement Lefebvre. "The Cinnamon and MATE editions of Linux Mint 18.1 are coming out this week. I hope you’ll enjoy the release and have a wonderful time with it."

Introducing the PIA (Private Internet Access) manager

If you're reading our daily reports, you should know that Linux Mint 18.1 "Serena" is based on the latest Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system and powered by the long-term supported Linux 4.4 kernel series. It's also shipping with the recently released Cinnamon 3.2 desktop environment for the Cinnamon Edition, and MATE 1.16 for the MATE flavor. Also, Linux Mint 18.1 KDE is coming soon with KDE Plasma 5.8 by default.

As soon as they're out, which should happen in the next 72 hours or so, we'll tell you all about its new features. Meanwhile, you should know that the Linux Mint has been working with the leading VPN service provider Private Internet Access on a PIA manager tool that makes it easy for users to set up their PIA VPN connection in Linux Mint. Lastly, KDE Plasma 5.8.4, Frameworks 5.28, and Applications 16.04.3 should be available shortly for Linux Mint 18 KDE users via the Kubuntu Backports PPA.
