Clement Lefebvre, leader of the Linux Mint project, has announced on July 23 that the upgrade path from the Linux Mint 17 (Qiana) and Linux Mint 17.1 (Rebecca) distributions to the Linux Mint 17.2 (Rafaela) operating system is now open for all editions.

What this means more exactly is that no matter what flavor of either the Linux Mint 17 or Linux Mint 17.1 operating system you're using, with the Cinnamon, MATE, KDE, or Xfce desktop environments, you can now upgrade to Linux Mint 17.2.

"The upgrade path from Linux Mint 17 and 17.1 to Linux Mint 17.2 is now open for all editions (Cinnamon, MATE, KDE and Xfce)," says Clement Lefebvre. "Instructions on how to perform this upgrade are available at http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=2871."

We reported at the beginning of the month that only users of the Cinnamon and MATE editions of the Linux Mint 17 and Linux Mint 17.1 distributions were able to upgrade to Linux Mint 17.2, but now users of the KDE and Xfce flavors can upgrade too.

Here's how to upgrade from Linux Mint 17 and 17.1 to Linux Mint 17.2

While the KDE and Xfce editions of Linux Mint 17.2 are currently in the RC (Release Candidate) state of development, users who want to jump ship and upgrade their Linux Mint 17 (Qiana) and Linux Mint 17.1 (Rebecca) installations can do so starting today.

To upgrade, open the Update Manager utility, click on the "Refresh" button to verify if there're new versions of the mintupdate and mint-upgrade-info package available, then make sure that you update them.

Next, you must go to the Edit menu and click on the "Upgrade to Linux Mint 17.2 Rafaela" entry. Follow the instructions on the screen, wait for the packages to be downloaded and upgraded, and reboot your computer when the upgrade process finishes.
