14 DAY TRIAL // Linux Lite developer Jerry Bezencon announced today the release and immediate availability for download of the Linux Lite 3.8 open-source operating system, a day earlier than initially expected.
Poised to be the last in the 3.x series, Linux Lite 3.8 is here with a bunch of changes and improvements, among which we can mention the implementation of the TLP power management tool for laptops in the Lite Tweaks utility, better support for the LibreOffice office suite, a new font viewer & installer, and regional support for DVDs.
"If you have DVDs that are from another region other than your own, you can now easily change region so that it will play in VLC. Insert your DVD, open a terminal and type regionset and follow the onscreen instructions. See this thread here for more information," says Jerry Bezencon in the release announcement.
Linux Lite 4.0 expected to land on June 1, 2018
Linux Lite 3.8 also ships with a Google-based search page as default homepage in the Mozilla Firefox web browser, updated help manual, new wallpapers, and up-to-date components like the Linux 4.4.0-112 kernel from Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus), Mozilla Firefox 58.0 "Quantum," Mozilla Thunderbird 52.5.0, LibreOffice 5.1.6.2, VLC Media Player 2.2.2, and GIMP 2.8.22.
If you want to install Linux Lite 3.8 on your personal computer, you are invited to download the live ISO images for either 32-bit or 64-bit systems right now through our web portal. Existing Linux Lite 3.6 users will be able to upgrade using the built-in package management tool, but there's no upgrade path from the beta release, nor from Linux Lite 2.x series.
The next major release of the Linux Lite operating system will be Linux Lite 4.0, which should be available for beta testing starting this spring, and the final release is expected to land on June 1, 2018. As the Linux Lite 3.x series was based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, we expect the Linux Lite 4.x series to be based on the upcoming Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver) operating system.
