14 DAY TRIAL // Linux Lite developer Jerry Bezencon had the pleasure of announcing the general availability of the final release of the Ubuntu-based Linux Lite 3.6 operating system.
Coming five months after the release of Linux Lite 3.4, Linux Lite 3.6 is based on Canonical's latest Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system, which means that it's powered by its long-term supported Linux 4.4 kernel, though users can install a wide range of kernels from the distro's stable repositories. Linux Lite 3.6 also introduces the Lite Sources in-house built app and several improvements across the entire system.
"In this release, we introduce two major new features. Firstly, Lite Sources is a repository selector that allows you to easily select a software repository nearest to you. When new versions of Linux Lite branded applications are released, you'll now get much faster download speeds thanks to Lite Sources," said Jerry Bezencon. "The second newest feature for Linux Lite 3.6 is the inclusion of both an online and offline search engine for the Linux Lite Help Manual."
Here's what's new in Linux Lite 3.6
Apart from the new Lite Sources app, which can be found under the Settings section of the Application Menu, and the new search engine for the Linux Lite Help Manual, Linux Lite 3.6 adds an Arc GTK+ theme for the Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client, which was updated to version 52.2.1, better Blu-Ray and Broadcom wireless support, minor GUI changes to both Lite Upgrade and Lite Welcome in-house built apps, and a set of new wallpapers.
As promised during the Beta stages of development, Linux Lite 3.6 changes the name of the Samba configuration file from linuxliteshare to liteshare. Mozilla Firefox 55.0.2 is the default web browser, though the Arc GTK+ theme for Firefox has been removed in this release. Among other pre-installed apps, we can mention the LibreOffice 5.1.6.2 office suite, VLC 2.2.2 media player, and GIMP 2.8.22 image editor and viewer. Download Linux Lite 3.6 now!
