Linux Lite creator Jerry Bezencon has unveiled the final release of the long-anticipated Linux Lite 3.0 computer operating system, a major version that includes dozens of new features and enhancements.

Linux Lite 3.0 has been in development for the past couple of months, and the community was able to get an early taste of the Ubuntu-based operating system in the second week of May, when Jerry Bezencon announced the Beta version, which pretty much included the same features that are available in the final release.

"A lot has changed since Series 2. We have a new login manager, new boot theme, Lite Software has had an overhaul, new system theme (Arc), we've added Share Hardware Configuration (Lite Info)," says Jerry Bezencon in the announcement. "In addition, there has been a lot of bug fixes and adjustments since the Beta release, thanks again for your feedback."

Here's what's new in Linux Lite 3.0

Based on the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) technologies, Linux Lite 3.0 comes with a brand new look based on the beautiful Arc GTK theme, including the Arc, Arc-Dark and Arc-Darker layouts, a series of new wallpapers, as well as a revamped boot splash theme.

The Lite Software graphical package manager has received a major overhaul in this release, bringing support for installing multiple applications simultaneously, along with the ability to install the Calibre, Audacity, and Pinta apps. Also, Lite Software now displays icons instead of select boxes, for easy identification of apps.

Also new in Linux Lite 3.0 is folder access support to the Applications Menu, so you can easily access your files on the local system, the Indicator Plugin has been removed, and an independent volume control Volti has been implemented in the system tray area. Please note that UEFI support is not available in this release.

Linux Lite 3.0 remains loyal to its initial vision of being a fast and simple desktop-oriented operating system, so there are now fewer PPAs (Personal Package Archives) installed by default in the base system. Also, it looks like system upgrades will now be pushed to users automatically to keep them up to date at all times.

Lastly, Linux Lite 3.0 will allow users to upload screenshots to the Imgur free image hosting service. Updated applications in Linux Lite 3.0 Beta include Mozilla Firefox 46.0.1, Mozilla Thunderbird 38.8.0, LibreOffice 5.1.2.2, VLC Media Player 2.2.2, and GIMP 2.8.16. The kernel is based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, version 4.4.0-21 at the moment of the release.
