On December 20, 2016, the developers of the Debian-based SparkyLinux operating system announced the availability of the latest stable Linux 4.9 kernel series in the unstable repos of the GNU/Linux distribution.

If you've been reading the news lately, you should be aware of the fact that Linux kernel 4.9 was officially released more than a week ago, on December 11, 2016, as announced by Linus Torvalds himself. This means that most Linux OS vendors should soon start preparing to migrate to the latest Linux 4.9 kernel branch.

It might take some time for the new Linux kernel 4.9 packages to land in the stable repositories of the most popular GNU/Linux distributions available today, including Arch Linux, Solus, Ubuntu, etc., but it looks like it landed earlier on the unstable repository of SparkyLinux.

"I was really busy last week creating and uploading new iso images of Sparky 4.5.2. I also tried to build the Linux kernel 4.9.0, but it did not work as it should. I rebuilt it today, so can be installed or upgraded if you already have installed older Sparky’s Linux kernel," explained one of the developers.

Here's how to install Linux kernel 4.9 on SparkyLinux

Therefore, if you want to install Linux kernel 4.9 on your SparkyLinux OS, you'll need to first enable the "unstable" repository. Then, follow the installation instructions provided by the development team at https://sparkylinux.org/wiki/doku.php/linux_kernel. Don't forget to reboot your PC after installing the new kernel.

In related news, the SparkyLinux developers announced last week the release of a new set of respin ISO images, dubbed SparkyLinux 4.5.2, which are recommended for new installations of the OS. You can download them right now from our website if you plan to use this GNU/Linux distribution on your personal computer.
