openSUSE Project's Dominique Leuenberger informed the Tumbleweed community about the latest goodies that landed in the stable software repositories of the rolling release operating system during the past week.

We're talking here about the openSUSE Tumbleweed snapshots released during the week of October 10, 2016, which brought several interesting software components that might get users of the rolling OS excited. For example, you can now enjoy the latest KDE Plasma 5.8 LTS desktop environment.

Moreover, the latest snapshots delivered the recently released LXQt 0.11.0 desktop environment, Mozilla Thunderbird 45.4.0 e-mail and news client, PostgreSQL 9.5 object-relational database, FreeType 2.7 font engine, which made some users happy and angered others, as well as the Linux 4.7.7 kernel.

"Even though Tumbleweed did not have any snapshots that needed to be canceled this week, we only got two snapshots out (1006 and 1010). Or, wording this positively: we released twice as many snapshots as last week. It’s not all that dark though: quite some human resources seem to have shifted to Leap 42.2," said Dominique Leuenberger.

Here's what's coming soon for OpenSuSE Tumbleweed users

If you're using the openSUSE Tumbleweed rolling operating system as your daily driver, you might be glad to learn that this week's snapshots will bring many cool technologies, among which we can mention the Linux 4.8 kernel, KDE Applications 16.08.2, KDE Plasma 5.8.1 LTS, Bash 4.4, and Boost 1.62.0 libraries. More details can be found in the mailing list announcement.

In the meantime, development of the openSUSE Leap 42.2 operating system continues, and tomorrow, October 18, 2016, we should be able to download and test drive the first Release Candidate (RC) version, which will be followed next month, on November 2, by the second one. The final openSUSE Leap 42.2 release launches worldwide on November 16.
