After informing us of the release of Linux kernel 4.8.2 and Linux kernel 4.7.8, Greg Kroah-Hartman announced the twenty-fifth maintenance update to the long-term supported Linux 4.4 kernel series.

Linux kernel 4.4.25 LTS arrives one week after the release of Linux kernel 4.4.24 LTS, and according to the appended shortlog and the diff from the previous version, it changes a total of 27 files, with 313 insertions and 137 deletions, which makes it a small update with only a handful of improvements and bug fixes to several hardware architectures and drivers.

"I'm announcing the release of the 4.4.25 kernel. All users of the 4.4 kernel series must upgrade," says Greg Kroah-Hartman. "The updated 4.4.y git tree can be found at: git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git linux-4.4.y and can be browsed at the normal kernel.org git web browser: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git;a=summary."

Users are urged to update their systems immediately

Looking at the changes, Linux kernel 4.4.25 LTS adds small improvements to the ARM, PowerPC (PPC), x86, and MIPS hardware architectures, updated CPUIdle, MFD, and character drivers, and various minor enhancements to the sound stack, especially to the ALSA sound driver, as well as a couple of security-related fixes and some core kernel cleanup. You should check out the changelog above if you're into technical details.

In the meantime, we strongly recommend that you update your system to Linux kernel 4.4.25 LTS if you're using a GNU/Linux operating system powered by a kernel from the long-term supported Linux 4.4 series. OS vendors and power users can download the Linux kernel 4.4.25 LTS sources right now via our website or directly from kernel.org and compile the new version manually.
