Nvidia users should not install this kernel

Linux Lite creator Jerry Bezencon has announced earlier today that the recently released Linux 4.11 kernel is now available for installation from the distribution's software repositories.

The Linux 4.11 kernel series is the latest stable release available at the moment of writing this article, and it looks like Linux Lite users are among the first to get it. It's available as we speak for both 64-bit and 32-bit installations, and it's the first to include the project's own firmware package called "linux-firmware-image-linuxlite."

"4.11 Linux Lite Kernel is now available for 32 & 64bit machines. This is the first Linux Lite kernel that includes our firmware package 'linux-firmware-image-linuxlite' (a.k.a linux-image-extra). Thank you to @light_user for this suggestion," said Jerry Bezencon in the forum announcement. "Only install this kernel if you need it or if you are adept at getting out of trouble from a TTY."

Here's how to install Linux kernel 4.11 on Linux Lite

If you're using the latest version of the Linux Lite operating system, you can now install the new Linux 4.11 kernel packages from the repos by opening a terminal emulator or switching to the virtual console and executing the command below. Once everything was successfully installed and configured, make sure you reboot your computer.

However, if you have an Nvidia GPU with the latest proprietary graphics drivers installed, please be aware of the fact that installing this kernel might break compatibility. If you're ignoring this warning and you decide to give Linux kernel 4.11 a go on your Linux Lite PC and Nvidia graphics no longer work correctly, you are on your own. Otherwise, DO NOT install this kernel.

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install linux-headers-linuxlite-4.11.0 linux-image-linuxlite-4.11.0 linux-firmware-image-linuxlite-4.11.0 -y
