The time has come for you to update the kernel packages of your GNU/Linux distribution if it's powered by Linux 4.1 LTS, as Greg Kroah-Hartman has announced the release and immediate availability for download of Linux kernel 4.1.6.

According to the appended shortlog, the sixth maintenance release of Linux kernel 4.1 LTS (Long-Term Support) brings with it numerous improvements to the MIPS architectures, as well as some enhancements for the x86, ARM, ARM64, PowerPC (PPC), and SPARC hardware architectures.

Linux kernel 4.1.6 LTS updates numerous drivers, especially for things like CLK, Crypto, DMA, GPU (mostly Radeon and Intel i915), hwmon, MD, networking (mostly Wireless, for things like ath10k), PHY, SCSI, Staging, Thermal, USB, and Xen. Additionally, there are sound improvements, and fixes for the NFS and OCFS2 file systems.

"I'm announcing the release of the 4.1.6 kernel. All users of the 4.1 kernel series must upgrade," says Greg Kroah-Hartman. "The updated 4.1.y git tree can be browsed at the normal kernel.org git web browser: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git;a=summary."

All users of the Linux 4.1 LTS kernel series must update as soon as possible

As expected, users are being urged to update their kernel packages to Linux kernel 4.1.6 LTS as soon as possible, or more precisely, as soon as the new kernel version arrives in the default software repositories of their GNU/Linux distributions.

Advances users can download Linux kernel 4.1.6 LTS right now via Softpedia or directly from the kernel.org website and start compiling/tweaking the kernel to their likings. Linux distributions vendors are also urged to update the kernel packages to Linux kernel 4.1.6 LTS if they're using a kernel from the Linux 4.1 LTS series.
