Immediately after informing the community about the general availability of Linux kernel 4.1.25 LTS, kernel developer Sasha Levin published details about the release of Linux kernel 3.18.34 LTS.

The Linux 3.18 kernel is a long-term support branch that is still being used in various GNU/Linux operating systems these days, and it looks like it will receive security patches and updates for a few more months, until January 2017. Therefore, users of this kernel series are urged to update to the Linux 3.18.34 release as soon as possible.

"I'm announcing the release of the 3.18.34 kernel. All users of the 3.18 kernel series must upgrade," says Sasha Levin. "The updated 3.18.y git tree can be found at: git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git linux-3.18.y and can be browsed at the normal kernel.org git web browser: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git;a=summary."

Here's what's new in Linux kernel 3.18.34 LTS

According to the appended shortlog, which also includes the diff from the previous point release announced two weeks ago, version 3.18.33, the Linux 3.18.34 LTS kernel brings changes to a total of 60 files, with 573 insertions and 346 deletions. Among them, we can mention improvements to the ARM, PA-RISC, PowerPC (PPC), and x86 instruction set architectures, and enhancements to the OCFS2 and ISOFS filesystems.

As with any new maintenance release of a Linux kernel series, numerous drivers are updated, and others improved, so Linux kernel 3.18.34 LTS comes with enhancements to the ACPI, ATA, EDAC, GPU (mostly Intel i915), HV, iiO, InfiniBand, MD, and USB drivers. Of course, there are also minor changes to the sound and networking stacks, as well as a few mm, crypto, and core kernel fixes.

Again, if you are using a GNU/Linux operating system powered by a kernel from the 3.18 series, you are urged to update to version 3.18.34 as soon as possible or as soon as it arrives in the main software repositories of your distribution. OS vendors and advanced users who know how to compile a kernel can download the Linux kernel 3.18.34 LTS sources right now via our website or directly from kernel.org.
