All users of the Linux 3.14 LTS series must update

After informing the community about the availability of the Linux 4.6.5 and Linux 4.4.16 LTS kernel versions for GNU/Linux operating systems, Greg Kroah-Hartman published details about the seventy-fourth maintenance update for Linux 3.14 LTS.

Linux kernel 3.14.74 LTS is here for select Linux distributions that provide their users with a long-term supported kernel that receives security patches and updated components for a couple of years, compared with normal kernel releases. However, the end of life support for the Linux 3.14 LTS kernel series should be reached sometime during the month of August 2016, so this might just be the last maintenance release.

"I'm announcing the release of the 3.14.74 kernel. All users of the 3.14 kernel series must upgrade," said Greg Kroah-Hartman. "The updated 3.14.y git tree can be found at: git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git linux-3.14.y and can be browsed at the normal kernel.org git web browser: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git;a=summary."

Here's what's new in Linux kernel 3.14.74 LTS

Linux kernel 3.14.74 LTS is not a major release, and, according to the diff from the previous maintenance update, version 3.14.73, a total of 59 files have been changed, with 350 insertions and 198 deletions. Taking a closer look at the appended shortlog, we can notice various improvements to the MIPS, ARM, x86, PowerPC (PPC), and s390 hardware architectures, as well as the CIFS and NFS filesystems.

There are also the usually updated drivers, this time for ATA, Crypto, GPU, HID, iiO, InfiniBand, SCSI, TTY, USB, and Xen devices, and it looks like there's a handful of sound stack enhancements and an updated networking stack with IPv6, IPv4, and mac80211 fixes. Various core kernel and mm changes are present as well.

If you're using a GNU/Linux operating system powered by a kernel from the Linux 3.14 LTS series, we recommend that you update to the 3.14.74 release as soon as possible, or more precisely as soon as the new version lands in the main software repositories of your distribution. The sources of Linux kernel 3.14.74 LTS are now available for download via our website or from kernel.org.
