Users of Linux 3.14 LTS kernel series are urged to update

After announcing earlier today, May 19, 2016, the availability of Linux kernel 4.5.5 and Linux kernel 4.4.11 LTS, renowned kernel developer Greg Kroah-Hartman informed the community about the release of Linux kernel 3.14.70 LTS.

The Linux 3.14 kernel series is a long-term supported one, and it will receive security fixes and small improvements for a couple of months, until August 2016, when it will reach end of life. The truth is that the last few maintenance releases for this kernel series have been very meager in content, and Linux kernel 3.14.70 LTS is no different.

Looking at the appended shortlog attached by Greg Kroah-Hartman to his mailing list announcement, we can notice that most of the changes are bug fixes implemented in the networking stack. They improve things like the DECnet suite of network protocols, the IPv4 network protocol, the vmw_vsock kernel module, the Logical Link Control (LCL) layer, as well as the X.25 ITU-T standard protocol suite.

"I'm announcing the release of the 3.14.70 kernel. All users of the 3.14 kernel series must upgrade," says Greg Kroah-Hartman. "The updated 3.14.y git tree can be found at: git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git linux-3.14.y and can be browsed at the normal kernel.org git web browser: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git;a=summary."

Users are urged to update to Linux 3.14.70 LTS as soon as possible

Other than the changes mentioned above, Linux kernel 3.14.70 LTS improves the ARM support for the OMAP 4 platform hardware, fixes a small issue with the ISOFS filesystem, and updates the Intel i915 and Radeon GPU drivers, along with the Atheros Ethernet and PnP BIOS ones. In numbers, Linux kernel 3.14.70 LTS changes a total of 17 files, with 79 insertions and 64 deletions.

As usual, if you are using a Linux kernel-based operating system powered by a kernel package from the Linux 3.14 LTS (Long Term Support) series, you are urged to update to version 3.14.70 as soon as possible, or more precisely as soon as Linux kernel 3.14.70 lands in the main software repositories of your GNU/Linux distribution. The sources of Linux kernel 3.14.70 LTS are now available for download as well via our website or from kernel.org.
