After having announced the release of Linux kernel 4.1.2 LTS and Linux kernel 3.10.84 LTS, Greg Kroah-Hartman published details about the forty-eighth maintenance release of the Linux 3.14 kernel series.

According to the release announcement, Linux kernel 3.14.48, which is an LTS (Long Term Support) version supported with security patches and bugfixes for a few more years, is here to add several optimizations to the ARM, ARM64, x86, MIPS, SPARC, and PowerPC (PPC) architectures, various updated drivers, as well as networking, KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine), and file systems improvements.

"I'm announcing the release of the 3.14.48 kernel. All users of the 3.14 kernel series must upgrade," says Greg Kroah-Hartman. "The updated 3.14.y git tree can be found at: git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git linux-3.14.y and can be browsed at the normal kernel.org git web browser: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git;a=summary."

All users of the Linux 3.14 kernel series must update as soon as possible

As expected, Greg Kroah-Hartman urges all users of the Linux 3.14 kernel series to upgrade to the Linux kernel 3.14.48 LTS release as soon as possible, or more precisely, as soon as the new maintenance version arrives in the default software repositories of their GNU/Linux distributions.

Advanced users who don't want to wait for the update to arrive on their distro's repositories can manually update the kernel packages by downloading and compiling the Linux kernel 3.14.48 LTS sources from either Softpedia or the kernel.org website, whichever suits them best. Linux distribution vendors are also urged to download Linux kernel 3.14.48 LTS and update the kernel packages in their operating systems.
