Users of the Linux 3.12 kernel series are urged to update

Today, September 6, 2016, Linux kernel developer Jiri Slaby has announced the release and immediate availability of the sixty-third maintenance update to the long-term supported Linux 3.12 kernel series.

Linux kernel 3.12.63 is here for those who want to use a long-term supported (LTS) kernel on their GNU/Linux distributions, as the branch will get new point releases until January 2017, and it looks like this one is not to be overlooked, as according to the diff from the previous maintenance update, Linux kernel 3.12.62 LTS, and today's appended shortlog, it changes a total of 104 files, with 979 insertions and 397 deletions.

"I'm announcing the release of the 3.12.63 kernel. All users of the 3.12 kernel series must upgrade," says Jiri Slaby. Here's what's new in Linux kernel 3.12.63 LTS

Linux kernel 3.12.63 LTS adds many changes, as mentioned before, and you can notice multiple improvements to the MIPS, x86, UM, ARC, ARM, and s390 hardware architectures, many updated drivers, in particular for Radeon, Intel i915, iiO, InfiniBand, MD, MMC, ATA, GPIO, MTD, Ethernet (Marvell), s390, SCSI, TTY, USB, Virtio, and Xen devices, as well as fixes to the CIFS, EXT4, FUSE, NFS, and NILFS2 filesystems.

There's also an updated sound and networking stack with changes to things like Bluetooth, IPv6, IPv4, IrDA, Netfilter, Netlabel, packet scheduler, and more. A KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) fix is also present, and there are a few core kernel changes as well.
