Jiri Slaby, the maintainer of the Linux 3.12 LTS (Long-Term Support) kernel branch, announced the immediate availability for download of the forty-seven maintenance release, a milestone that brings enhancements to various instruction set architectures, as well as many updated drivers.

Looking at the appended shortlog, we can notice that Linux kernel 3.12.47 LTS adds various improvements to the ARC, ARM, ARM64, IA64, Metag, MIPS, s390, PowerPC (PPC), SPARC, and x86 hardware architectures, some fixes to the OCFS2 filesystem, several sound enhancements, as well as many under-the-hood improvements, and updated drivers.

Taking about updated drivers, Linux kernel 3.12.47 LTS adds many of them, especially for things like ATA, Block, Char, EDAC, Crypto, GPU (mostly Radeon), HID, MD, MMC, SCSI, iSCSI, USB, and vHost. All of these received all sorts of bugfixes and new features that have been detailed in the diff from the forty-sixth maintenance release of Linux kernel 3.12 LTS.

"I'm announcing the release of the 3.12.47 kernel. All users of the 3.12 kernel series must upgrade," says Jiri Slaby. "The updated 3.12.y git tree can be found at: git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git linux-3.12.y and can be browsed at the normal kernel.org git web browser: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git;a=summary."

All users of Linux 3.12 LTS kernel must update as soon as possible

As expected, all users of the Linux kernel 3.12 LTS series are urged to update to the 3.12.47 maintenance release as soon as possible, or more precisely as soon as the new version arrives in the default software repositories of their Linux kernel-based operating systems. All GNU/Linux distribution vendors are also urged to download the Linux kernel 3.12.47 LTS sources from either the kernel.org website or via Softpedia and upgrade the kernel packages in their OSes immediately.
