After announcing the release of Linux kernel 4.4.3 LTS for all GNU/Linux operating systems, renowned kernel maintainer Greg Kroah-Hartman informs us about the availability of Linux kernel 3.10.98 LTS.

The long-term supported Linux 3.10 kernel branch just got its ninety-eighth maintenance release, which, according to the appended shortlog, introduces a modest amount of changes, mostly drivers updates, but also small improvements to various hardware architectures, file systems, and a few other things.

Taking a closer look at the change, we can notice that updates to the iiO, IOMMU, SCSI, iSCSI, TTY, and USB drivers, various improvements to the ARM, m32r, and x86 hardware architectures, a few fixed to the Btrfs, EXT4, CIFS, NFS, procfs, FUSE, UDF, and devpts filesystems, as well as minor core kernel, mm, scripts, security, sound, tools, and networking stack (only an IPv6 fix) changes.

"I'm announcing the release of the 3.10.98 kernel. All users of the 3.10 kernel series must upgrade," said Greg Kroah-Hartman. "The updated 3.10.y git tree can be found at: git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git linux-3.10.y and can be browsed at the normal kernel.org git web browser: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git;a=summary."

Users need to update as soon as possible

In numbers, Linux kernel 3.10.98 LTS changes a total of 65 files, with 436 insertions and 161 deletions. It might not sound like much, but you will still need to update your Linux 3.10 kernel packages as soon as possible to the 3.10.98 build. You can download the Linux kernel 3.10.98 sources right via Softpedia or directly from the kernel.org website.

However, if you don't know how to compile a kernel, it is best to wait for the maintainers of your GNU/Linux operating system to update the Linux kernel packages and then apply the new version. OS vendors are urged to grab, compile, tweak, and push the new Linux 3.10.98 kernel to their distribution's repos.
