Since the end result of the next-generation DVD format war is still very much unclear, it seems that the idea of releasing dual players, which can accommodate both formats, is becoming more and more attractive for consumer electronics manufacturers.
And the latest announcement regarding such a product comes from an UK-based company called Passive Technologies, which has recently rolled out the lifeStation, a device that targets that all-important main spot in one's home entertainment center.
Quite obviously, the device's main selling point is represented by its capacity of playing both next-gen formats, but, unfortunately, that's pretty much all the technical info we've got on this particular subject. However, the manufacturer does inform us that the lifeStation system use the latest generation of video processing technologies (AMD chipset) delivering PVR, HDTV and next-generation HD disc capabilities, including here playback resolutions of up to 1080p.
Furthermore, the device provides hardware-accelerated processing of new Blue Ray & HD DVD video formats, ensures stutter-free playback, and its mCrystal DAC boards and T-class amplifiers deliver a high-quality audio experience. Additionally, the device incorporates one (or several) HDMI interfaces, and it also sports a built-in SSD array with storage capacities of up to 1.5TB.
Another interesting feature provided by the media player from Passive Technologies is its very attractive external casing, which, beside being handcrafted, offers silent operation with the DynaChill 3 cooling system. The fan less design means that users can enjoy all the device's processing power without the distraction of noisy fan.
According to the company, the device is designed to be used mostly by system integrators, which means that it can assure fast and seamless streaming across the users' homes. Furthermore, the lifeStation provides several control options, namely either via the standard handheld lifeStation radio controlled bi-directional remote or with the multi-room Creston or AMX tablet modules.
Unfortunately, the company's not providing any pricing information, so if you want to purchase one of these things, the best way is to check out one of the company's UK retail partners.
