The Document Foundation has just revealed that LibreOffice 5.0.1 has been released, making this the first maintenance version for the new generation of the famous office suite.

As it was to be expected, LibreOffice 5.0 has been deemed as the most successful release ever made. The guys from The Document Foundation are not making this statement lightly, and they know they have to keep up the quality of the releases. For this reason alone we have the first maintenance version just a couple of weeks after the 5.0 branch was pushed out the door.

A maintenance version is usually made available to cover the first issues that have been identified by developers and community alike. Don't expect to see any kind of new features, just fixes for some of the more obvious problems. It's still not a perfect office suite, and there are still some issues present, but the biggest ones have been dealt with. Expect this new version to land soon in you repositories.

LibreOffice 5.0.1 is for enthusiasts

When The Document Foundation releases a new branch, it's not usually adopted by companies or large entities. These will be using the older and more trustworthy versions, which are maintained for a long period of time.

“The Document Foundation (TDF) releases LibreOffice 5.0.1, the first minor release of the LibreOffice 5.0 family, with a number of fixes over the major release announced on August 5. So far, LibreOffice 5.0 is the most popular LibreOffice ever, based on the feedback from the marketplace. LibreOffice 5.0.1 is targeted to technology enthusiasts, early adopters and power users. For more conservative users, and for enterprise deployments, TDF suggests the 'still' version: LibreOffice 4.4.5,” reads the official announcement.

As usual, you can download the latest LibreOffice packages form Softpedia, although it's a good idea to wait until they are ready in the repositories of your distro.
