This is a minor update in the LibreOffice 4.4.x branch

The Document Foundation announced that LibreOffice 4.4.5 has been released and is now available for download. Until the launch of the new LibreOffice 5.0, in August, this is the most advanced version of the office suite you can find.

Despite the fact that a new major upgrade is planned for LibreOffice, the developers of the office suite have no intention of dropping this branch. In fact, a few other updates are planned for this branch and the Document Foundation will continue to maintain it for quite a while.

Because so many updates have been released for the LibreOffice 4.x branch, it's now considered a very stable iteration. It has been adopted by a large number of Linux distributions, and it's available in official repositories from all over the world. If you have this version of LibreOffice installed, it would be a good idea to upgrade as soon as possible.

What's new in LibreOffice 4.4.5

"The Document Foundation (TDF) announces LibreOffice 4.4.5, the fifth minor release of the LibreOffice 4.4 family, with over 80 fixes over the previous version. LibreOffice 4.4.5 is replacing LibreOffice 4.3.7 as the 'still' version for more conservative users and enterprise deployments. The Document Foundation suggests to deploy LibreOffice in enterprises and large organizations with the backing of professional support by certified people," reads the official website.

As usual, the new LibreOffice will land in repositories for various Linux distros, but not at the same time. If you have an Ubuntu system, you can just add a PPA and get it that way. Enter these commands in a terminal:

code
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/libreoffice-4-4
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
You can also download the source packages for LibreOffice 4.4.5 from Softpedia if you want to compile them yourself, but you can also find the binaries for some of the components. In any case, you need to make sure that you don't run two different versions at the same time.
