LG is currently promoting the G6 flagship that the South Korean company announced earlier this year, during the Mobile World Congress back in February. Meanwhile, the company is working on an upcoming smartphone, one that would feature an OLED display.

Reports from Korea seem to suggest that LG is ready to make the leap from LCD displays to OLED screens on its smartphones. The move would be quite natural considering that the company has one of the most competitive display divisions out there.

LG V30 will be the first LG smartphone to feature an OLED display and it will arrive sometime in September this year. The next LG flagship will be announced next year, and it will feature the G7 retail name.

LG V30 will reportedly have a larger display than the G6

The report also mentions that the V30 will be the largest-screen LG premium phone, which means that it will have a larger screen than the G6 and V20’s 5.7-inch display. The screen resolution could be 1440 x 2880 pixels, same as on the G6 and the phone could actually feature a secondary screen, just like on the V20.

LG will reportedly start production of OLED panels in July, and some of them will equip the V30 smartphone, while others will be supplied to Chinese phone makers. LG Display will also focus on increasing efforts to produce OLED screens and thus take on big players in the market, like Samsung Display.

Samsung uses OLED screens for almost 70% of its smartphones, while its Display division manages to dominate more than 95% of the mobile OLED market. Samsung is also the only supplier of OLED panels for Apple’s first OLED iPhone, set to be announced later this year.

LG Display naturally aims to tackle other major display manufacturers, but analysts say that some time will pass until it will be able to record a similar yield rate as its main rival, Samsung Display.
