Strategy Analytics revealed a study showing that LG has become the third biggest smartphone vendor in the US, managing to reach a 20% market share during the period between January and March this year.

LG’s market share rose about 3% during the first quarter of the year, reaching a share of 20%, compared to 17.1% a year ago, according to a report. The Korean smartphone maker managed to sell 7.3 million phones in the US during the first quarter of this year.

It’s worth mentioning that sales of the company’s latest G6 flagship weren’t included in the study, since the smartphone was released during the second quarter of this year and it will be featured in future studies revealing sales recorded for Q2.

LG recorded steady sales of K and X series

Analysts say that LG managed to record steady sales of low-end models in the K and X series, as well as premium smartphones like the V20, which comes with a secondary display and dual-camera setup on the back.

Apple and Samsung continue to be the largest smartphone vendors in the US, accounting for 34.5% and 24.6% of the market. Samsung’s market share decreased in the past few quarters, following the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco, but the company has started to gradually recover and already recorded satisfactory sales of its latest flagship, the Galaxy S8.

The Galaxy Note 7 discontinuation benefited many smartphone makers, including LG, as some customers switched to the V20 instead of Samsung phones. An LG official stated that the market reacted positively to the G6, and LG expects sales of its latest flagship to boost the smartphone division, which recorded operating losses in the first quarter.

But it remains to be seen if LG will be able to keep its momentum, considering that Samsung is heavily promoting its latest flagship, while preparing to announce a new premium smartphone, the Galaxy Note 8, in the coming months. Apple is also working on a completely redesigned iPhone 8 and new iPhone 7s devices, which are set to arrive later this year.
