LG has used the IFA 2016 show in Germany to unveil its new smart refrigerator that comes with a 21.5-inch touchscreen powered by Windows 10.

Called the LG Smart Instaview Door-in-Door Refrigerator, the new device is not yet available for purchase, but the company wants to launch it in the coming months.

In terms of features, it’s not only a refrigerator but also a fully featured computer with Windows 10, allowing you to perform almost the same activities as on a regular PC. You can browse the web, install apps, talk to Cortana, and listen to music in Groove.

What to do with a smart fridge with Windows 10?

The biggest question, though, is why anyone would need Windows 10 implemented in the refrigerator doors.

While there could be several answers to this question, the manufacturing company says that Windows 10 includes both a rich set of apps and tools that could come in very handy, including a countdown timer, Cortana to perform tasks without touching the screen or installing recipe apps to assist you while you cook dinner.

For instance, you can use Windows 10’s built-in countdown timer to add expiration dates for each meal you have in the fridge, and you’ll receive a notification when this date is reached. Additionally, installing health apps makes it possible to keep an eye on calories and track your diet easily.

Without a doubt, the apps available in the Windows Store opens the door for a wide array of activities that can be performed by the fridge, and given that more devs are jumping on the Windows 10 bandwagon, possibilities in this regard are continuously expanding.

But obviously, this thing doesn’t come cheap. The refrigerator is expected to be available for approximately $500 (about €450) when it goes on sale in the coming months. Full details and pricing for each market will be provided by LG when sales kick off.
