Both phones could be announced at MWC 2017

LG confirmed a few weeks ago that its flagship smartphone, the G6, would be officially unveiled on February 26. Even though the name of the device hasn't been mentioned, it's pretty clear what the South Korean company will announce at Mobile World Congress (MWC).

However, aside from the usual mid-range Android smartphones that LG generously throws on the market each time it comes to the trade fair, there might be a couple of unexpected surprises.

The names of two possible LG smartphones were trademarked not long ago, which suggest that they might be products to be announced very soon, GSM Info reports.

LG filed for the G6 Compact and G6 Lite trademarks last month, and judging by their names, these are clearly downgraded versions of the company's flagship smartphone, the G6.

Although LG is no stranger to “Lite” models, the fact that the company plans to launch a “Compact” version of its flagship suggests a new business strategy. If there is an LG G6 Compact planned, the phone will target customers who want a powerful smartphone in a much smaller body.

The formula is being used by Apple and Sony Mobile to great success, so perhaps LG saw an opportunity here to somehow boost the sales of its yearly flagship.

Unfortunately, there's no telling whether or not LG will introduce these devices at MWC 2016, but it would make perfect sense if the handset maker takes the wraps off the G6 later this month.

It's also worth mentioning that the documentation doesn't contain any additional information on the products, just their names and the date when the trademarks were filed: January 20.

If we had to guess, the LG G6 Compact will probably share the same specs as the regular model, but it will come in a smaller form factor. Smaller display and battery will probably be the only differences between the compact and standard G6 models.

On the other hand, the LG G6 Lite will be the true downgraded version of the G6. Another chipset will most likely be included instead of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 CPU, as well as less amount of memory and smaller display.
