LG’s G6 is certainly one of the most appealing premium smartphones on the market, and LG is apparently planning to bring a new and exciting feature to the smartphone. The G6 could soon welcome 3D face recognition features.

Reports from South Korea revealed that LG recently signed a partnership with local facial recognition solutions firm Oez, developer of OezFR software. Reportedly, LG already tested the new technology for its G6 smartphone and users should expect to receive it as early as June, when the LG Pay mobile payment system will arrive.

This would be the first time that a facial recognition system will be used for financial transactions in the premium smartphone sector, according to an industry source.

Facial recognition technology could arrive on a number of LG phones

The decision to use Oez software is connected to the fact that the software solution can use contactless biometric technology in other LG smartphones, including V20 and G5.

This means that the technology could arrive to other premium LG devices in the future. In addition, Oez face-scanning technology requires up to 5MB of memory and features security measures to prevent instances when the feature would be activated using pictures of users. Such an issue affects Samsung’s iris recognition technology, which can be unlocked using an image of the smartphone’s owner, placed at the exact distance from the phone as the user’s face.

Samsung’s latest flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, also come with facial recognition features for user authentication, therefore LG’s latest partnership aims at keeping with market trends. Moreover, Apple is also expected to incorporate a similar contactless authentication system on its anniversary iPhone 8, set to arrive later this year.

LG’s recently released G6 also features fingerprint recognition technology, but iris scanners have become quite popular on the smartphone market. The global rollout of LG G6 started last week, while the company continues to promote the premium phone and recently posted a video showing the G6 being put through multiple tests to demonstrate its reliability.
