Cortana could soon be used as default SMS app

Microsoft is hard at work to make Cortana a more “personal” assistant, so the company is adding new functionality that would allow this feature to help us perform a series of tasks without even touching our devices.

One such update appears to be full control for Cortana over messages arriving on a Windows 10 Mobile phone, as new screenshots posted by Plaffo reveal that Microsoft will soon allow users to set Cortana as the default SMS app.

While it’s not very clear how this is going to work, it wouldn’t be the first implementation of Cortana in the Messaging app of Windows 10 Mobile. The personal assistant already has access to messages on a Windows 10 Mobile device and can read and reply to texts, but most likely, Microsoft is aiming for deeper implementation of Cortana in the new operating.

The source claims that these screenshots are coming for an internal build of Windows 10 Mobile, and the feature could soon become available for insiders as well in a future preview build.

Cortana could help bring PCs and phones in sync

At the same time, Microsoft is also working to provide Cortana with features that would better bring mobile devices and PCs powered by Windows 10 in sync.

Specifically, users will soon be able to view missed calls and app notifications right on their Windows 10 PCs, in a similar way to how Mac users can interact with notifications on their iPhones. This functionality is currently in the works at Microsoft, sources say, and once again, options in this regard could be implemented in a future mobile build released to insiders.

For the moment, the release of Windows 10 Mobile for Windows Phone users seems to be the hottest topic this week, as sources allegedly familiar with the matter have suggested that Microsoft is now getting ready to give the go-ahead to the upgrade. No confirmation has been provided, though, so it could be a false alarm once again.
