European pricing for the Galaxy S9 leaks

Samsung will take the wraps off the Galaxy S9 on February 25, and while we already knew pretty much everything about the device, what we didn’t actually know was the pricing.

But information published by serial leakster Evan Blass reveals how much the Galaxy S9 is going to cost in Europe when it goes on sale later this month (pre-orders only; the device will ship in early March).

According to the leak, the standard Samsung Galaxy S9 with a 5.8-inch screen will be priced at 841 Euros on the Old Continent, while the bigger Galaxy S9+ will have a price tag of 997 Euros. At the existing currency rates, this means the S9 will cost around $1,045 in the United States and the S9+ should hit the shelves at approximately $1,250.

More affordable than an iPhone X

While at first glance this means the Galaxy S9 will be more expensive than the iPhone X, keep in mind that conversion rates can’t be considered an indicative of how much a device would cost because of European taxes. Electronics are typically more expensive in Europe than in the United States, so there’s a good chance the iPhone X will remain the more expensive phone of the two.

For comparison, the Galaxy S8 is substantially cheaper than the iPhone X at $724.99 for the standard version and $824.99 for the bigger model. Even if Samsung commits to a $100 price increase for the new generation, the S9 still remains cheaper than the base iPhone X model which retails for $999.

On the other hand, it’s worth knowing that Samsung Galaxy S9 comes with just a storage version – 64GB, as compared to the iPhone X, which offers a second option with 256GB. Samsung, instead bets big on micro SD card support, an approach that the company used on previous-generation models as well.

More information on the pricing of the new Samsung Galaxy S9 for each market will be shared during the company’s press event on February 25.
