No SIM and PIN pad available after updating

Windows 10 build 14926 was released to fast ring insiders on both PCs and mobile devices, but the latter category seems to be impacted by critical bugs that make it impossible to use a number of phones.

First and foremost, there’s a bug that prevents the PIN pad from showing up after installing the latest build and Microsoft says that it’s aware of the problem and is already working on a fix. Most likely, this fix will land when the next build is released, but a specific date is not yet available.

For the moment, the only way to repair this bug is to perform a full reset of the phone, and while there are many users who aren’t willing to turn to such a dramatic workaround, it’s important to note that these are the risks of being part of the Windows Insider program and running Windows 10 preview builds.

“We are investigating small set of isolated reports that after upgrading to Build 14926, the pin pad is no longer visible to unlock the phone even after rebooting the phone. If you have hit this issue, you can follow the steps here for resetting an unresponsive phone (hard reset) which gets your phone back into a working state on Build 14926,” Dona Sarkar, the head of the Windows Insider program, noted.

No SIM error

And there’s a second critical bug that’s impacting a number of Windows 10 Mobile devices, this time causing them to lose cellular capabilities because the SIM card is no longer detected.

“We are also investigating reports that after upgrading to Build 14926, some phones lose the ability to use their SIM card. A hard reset also fixes this issue as well,” Dona said.

Microsoft says that this second bug wasn’t discovered in the internal testing, so the company needs a bit more time to diagnose the issue and develop a fix before anything else. It could take some time until this happens, so a full reset still seems to be the only option for the time being.
