The open-source and cross-platform OpenRA project, which tries to recreate and improve the classic Command & Conquer real-time strategy (RTS) games, has been updated to version 20161015.

OpenRA 20161015 is the latest stable update, as announced by developer Oliver Brakmann on the project's website a few days ago. While OpenRA is still working to add support for the second generation of Command & Conquer games, including C&C: Tiberian Sun, players received many enhancement for the C&C: Tiberian Dawn, C&C: Red Alert, and Dune 2000 games that are already contained in the new version.

"The first place you will notice this is the much-improved game content installer. It is now able to copy and install game assets from many more installation sources, such as the original release CDs, the First Decade DVDs, installed copies of the Dune 2000 Gruntsmod edition and even the C&C Ultimate Edition from Origin," said Oliver Brakmann.

It also looks like the improved OpenRA game content installer can now automatically install the campaign briefing videos (finally!). However, there's an ugly side to this functionality, as players will have to reinstall the game assets when launching the OpenRA 20161015 update for the first time because it installs the new content into a different location than the one used in previous versions.

Porting of the original campaign missions continues

Among other new features and improvements contained in the OpenRA 20161015 stable update, we can mention the addition of new configuration options to allow players to customize the behaviour of the mouse scrolling, along with new keyboard shortcuts for navigating the map edges, controlling the music player, bookmarking positions on the map, as well as for building five units at once.

The aircraft reloading behavior has been improved as well, and there are a bunch of bug fixes for the most annoying issues and crashes reported by users since the previous OpenRA update. In the meantime, porting of the original campaign missions continues with seven new missions for C&C: Tiberian Dawn, one new mission for C&C: Red Alert, and one for Dune 2000.

Lastly, it looks like OpenRA 20161015, which you can download right now via our website for GNU/Linux operating systems, introduces three new missions for C&C: Red Alert, which can be played in both single and cooperative multiplayer modes. More details about the new changes, as well as downloads for other supported platforms, can be accessed on the release notes page.
