GNU/Linux developer Arne Exton informs us about the availability for download of a new build of his RaspEX project that brings the latest version of the Ubuntu Linux operating system to Raspberry Pi SBCs.

RaspEX Build 160421 has been released on the same day with Canonical's Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system, on which it is based, and it promises to offer a lightweight LXDE-based desktop experience to Raspberry Pi 3 and Raspberry Pi 2 users.

The new RaspEX release ships with a brand-new kernel, support for Bluetooth, the Mozilla Firefox web browser, as a replacement for Chromium because it apparently offers better support for watching YouTube videos, as well as the Wicd as the default network manager.

"As Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial Xerus was released yesterday, I simply had to upgrade RaspEX. Unfortunately, I could not get Kodi (XBMC) Media Center to work in this build. I have therefore kept the “old” version (from 160402) of RaspEX with Kodi on the servers," said Arne Exton.

Based on Debian, Ubuntu, and Linaro

RaspEX Build 160421 is a Linux ARM operating system specifically designed for Raspberry Pi 3 and Raspberry Pi 2 single-board computers, based not only on the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) OS, but also on Debian GNU/Linux 8 (Jessie), and Linaro Open Source software for ARM SoCs.

RaspEX also comes preloaded with the VNC4Server and Samba software, which let you connect your Raspberry Pi device to your Windows-based computers in your home network, and if you install a decent Telnet or SSH client on your Windows PC, such as Putty, you'll be able to control RaspEX remotely.

RaspEX Build 160421 is available for free, and you can download it right now via our website. Detailed installation instructions have been provided by Arne Exton on the project's homepage. Also, our tech-savvy users who are curious to know what packages are available in RaspEX can study the list of installed packages.
