Opera Software pushed today a new beta build of its upcoming Opera 49 web browser for all supported platforms, bringing back the built-in VR 360 player, which has been greatly improved.

It won't be long until Opera 49 hits the streets as the new stable release of the Chromium-based web browser, and today's Opera 49.0.2725.31 Beta RC build marks the return of the built-in VR 360 player for watching 360-degree videos from the Web directly into a supported virtual reality headset.

Opera 49 will be world's first web browser to support 360-degree videos, allowing owners of Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, or any other OpenVR-compatible VR headset to enjoy immersive virtual reality content without having to download the videos and play them in a third-party application.

"Opera’s VR 360 Player will automatically detect an installed VR headset. When a user browses to a video, the "Watch in VR" button will appear on the top (next to the video pop out button). One simple click will engulf the viewer into the 360-degree world offered by the video," said Andrzej Czarnecki, Product Manager at Opera Software.

Ubuntu 17.10 with GNOME now fullly supported

The built-in VR 360 player comes with several improvements to fix previously reported regressions related to video flickering, audio/video synchronization, VR state detection via the "Watch in VR" button and frame order management, which prevents frames from dropping or image flicker.

Other than that, it looks like Opera Software improved support for the recently released Ubuntu 17.10 (Artful Aardvark) GNU/Linux operating system running the GNOME 3 desktop environment by default, improved the Speed Dial, and updated some translations.
