Dmitry Shachnev, a renowned Ubuntu Core and Debian developer, has been extremely proud to announce earlier today that the latest GNOME Flashback packages, versions 3.16 and 3.17, are now available for testing in the default software repositories of the Debian Testing and Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) operating systems.

According to Mr. Shachnev, the GNOME Flashback 3.16 is a very important release that brings many attractive features when compared to the previous stable version, GNOME Flashback 3.14, which was distributed as part of the GNOME 3.14 desktop environment.

GNOME Flashback 3.16 consists of the GNOME Panel and GNOME Applets packages, which have been updated to version 3.16.1, as well as the Metacity window manager and GNOME Flashback helper application, which are currently at version 3.17.2. They all include several new features that have been listed on Mr. Shachnev's blog post.

"Some time ago GNOME Flashback 3.16/3.17 packages landed in Debian testing and Ubuntu wily," says Dmitry Shachnev. "GNOME Flashback is the project which continues the development of components of classic GNOME session, including the GNOME Panel, the Metacity window manager, and so on."

GNOME Flashback provides you with the GNOME Classic session

For those of you who are not in the loop, we remind you that the GNOME Flashback project is in charge of the classic session of the GNOME 3 desktop environment, bringing back that two-pane traditional layout everyone loved a while ago. GNOME Flashback was previously known as GNOME Fallback.

Those of you who are running the Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) or Debian Testing distribution are urged to help test the latest GNOME Flashback 3.16 and/or 3.17 packages that have been published on the main software repositories of the aforementioned Linux kernel-based operating systems.
