GNU/Linux developer Arne Exton has released an updated version of his Exton|OS Light distro, which has been recently rebased on Canonical's latest Ubuntu 17.10 (Artful Aardvark) operating system.

Exton|OS Light Live DVD Build 170918 is, in fact, one of the first GNU/Linux distributions to have been rebased on Ubuntu 17.10, which was officially released on October 19, 2017, as the first Ubuntu release in seven years to replace the Unity user interface with the GNOME 3 desktop environment.

However, Exton|OS Light doesn't use GNOME, but, instead, it deploys the ultra lightweight and low on resources Openbox window manager, which the developer customized to look as modern as possible. Not to mention that Exton|OS Light ships with only a minimum of packages pre-installed.

Here's what's included in Exton|OS Light

Among the packages included in the latest Exton|OS Light release, we can mention Google Chrome web browser, SMPlayer video player, Audacious music player, SMTube YouTube browser, downloader and player, LXTerminal terminal emulator, PCManFM file manager, GIMP image editor, as well as the Gparted partition editor.

Samba is installed as well so you can discover and connect to Windows computers on your local area network, which can be configured with the NetworkManager tool. Synaptic Package Manager is there as well to help you discover more packages if you need to install additional apps or replace existing ones.

"I give you the pleasure of installing all extra packages you need after a hard disk installation of Exton|OS Light. Use Synaptic for that. You can of course also install new packages while running the system live (from DVD/USB stick), but nothing will be saved after a reboot," said Arne Exton in the release notes.

But the best thing about the new Exton|OS Light release comes with Refracta Tools to allow you to easily build your own live system based on Ubuntu 17.10 (Artful Aardvark).
