Google is apparently planning to forsake the Nexus brand this year

Earlier this month, rumors of the Nexus 8 tablet were suddenly revitalized when a report posted by infamous publication DigiTimes suggested the slate might be scheduled to arrive in mid-2014.

The report claimed the new Nexus 8 would not be powered by the usual Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset, but by an Intel Bay Trail processor. As for manufacturing partners, Google has been said to choose ASUS, from pretenders like Samsung, LG or Lenovo.

However, note that DigiTimes hasn't had a spot-clear track record when it comes to product announcements.

Remember than back in December, the same publication reported the elusive next-gen Nexus 10 would be unveiled at CES 2014 and Samsung was hailed as the manufacturer. But CES 2014 came and went, and we all know nothing was revealed there.

But the new Nexus 8 story further complicates. Recent gossip circulating around the web claims Google is ready to drop its popular Nexus moniker this year.

Serious tipster @eldarmurtazin claims that Google will be renouncing Nexus in favor of a new brand, called “Play Edition” at the moment. But we’re probably going to see a new name altogether.

So if the Nexus 8 release is pushed back further on towards 2015, we might end up with a device with a totally different name.
