The Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 are the two devices currently locked in tight competition for the attention and money of gamers all over the world, and according to Kudo Tsunoda of Microsoft his company's design can deliver unique value that cannot be matched by its rival with cross-platform play.

Speaking to Gamespot, the executive explains that the feature allows PC and console fans to play together regardless of the device, something that the company wants to continue to work on in the future.

Tsunoda adds, "It's a really unique value that only we can offer. You still need very gamer-focused values, but there's lots of things you can do with our technology. We've really got a lot more going on. We're doing things that can't be done on any other console."

The executive believes that Microsoft can expand the range of devices on which gamers can play the same title and that the Xbox One ecosystem has a lot of new ideas that can be implemented as the tech continues to evolve.

At the moment, the integration between the home consoles and PCs that run Windows 10 is relatively limited, but it will expand as more titles designed with both in mind are launched later in the year and in 2016.

Microsoft is happy with the reaction to the backwards compatibility announcement

Before 2015 is through, Xbox One gamers should also get access to full backwards compatibility for the 360, which is one of the features that Microsoft found a way to implement after fans requested it for a long time.

Tsunoda also believes that exclusives that are coming in the fall, including Halo 5: Guardians, Rise of the Tomb Raider and Forza Motorsport 6, will also give its console an edge.

The PlayStation 4 is not set to get any backwards compatibility according to Sony, although more remakes and collections are being considered, and its cross-platform capabilities are limited to the Vita.

But the PS4 continues to lead in terms of actual sales, as confirmed by the recently revealed NPD Group numbers for the month of July in the United States.

Sony also has a strategy of offering more content or exclusive deals for major launches like Destiny - The Taken King, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 and Star Wars: Battlefront.
