Today, Kubuntu and KDE developer Marcin Sągol have announced the availability of the latest KDE Plasma 5.6.4 desktop environment in the special repositories for Kubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) users.

Launched back in April as part of the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system, the Kubuntu 16.04 LTS officially recognized flavor shipped with the KDE Plasma 5.5 desktop environment and KDE Applications 15.12 software suite.

But the latest version of the KDE Plasma 5 desktop is now 5.6.4, and users have been waiting for it for too long now. Therefore, today we're happy to inform Kubuntu 16.04 LTS users that the wait is finally over.

They can now install the KDE Plasma 5.6.4 desktop environment on their Kubuntu 16.04 LTS operating systems right now by carefully following the instructions provided in the next paragraphs.

But first, just a quick reminder that KDE Plasma 5.6.4 has brought improvements to the Plasma Workspace, Plasma Discover, Plasma SDK, Plasma Addons, Plasma Networkmanager, Plasma Desktop, KWin, KScreen, Info Center, and the Breeze Plymouth theme.

Here's how to update Kubuntu 16.04 LTS to KDE Plasma 5.6.4

If you're running Kubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) on your personal computer and you want to update the current KDE Plasma 5 desktop to KDE Plasma 5.6.4, you'll have to first make a backup of your most important files.

Then, open your favorite terminal app (e.g. Konsole) and copy/paste or type the following lines of code in the terminal window, one by one, hitting the Enter key after each one.

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
sudo apt update && sudo apt -y full-upgrade
Wait for all the new KDE Plasma 5.6.4 packages to be downloaded and installed. When everything is complete, please reboot your computer. That's it! You can now enjoy the latest KDE Plasma 5.6 desktop environment in your Kubuntu 16.04 LTS OS.
