Development of the major Krita 3.2 open-source and cross-platform digital painting software kicked off yesterday with the release of the first Beta milestone, giving the community a first glimpse of the new features and improvements.

Compared to Krita 3.1.4, which appears to be the last point release in the current stable Krita 3.1 series of the application, Krita 3.2 promises some very cool new features, such as the use the gmic-qt plugin, which completely replaces the older G'MIC plugin, and the addition of Radian’s brush set to create a strong, painterly look.

New shortcuts have been added as well to make it easier to change the visibility and lock of layer states, a new dialog was implemented to make it easier for users to copy and paste relevant information about bug reports, and there's now a Smart Patch tool integrated, which was backported from the Krita 4.0 pre-Alpha builds.

Gaussian Blur filter updated to use kernels up to 1000 pixels in diameter

Krita 3.2 will also come with an updated Gaussian Blur filter that can now use kernels up to 1000 pixels in diameter, as well as a much-improved Clone brush. It also reimplements support for painting with your finger when Krita is used with a touch screen display, and adds some performance improvements by fixing a bunch of nasty bugs.

"We’re releasing the first beta for Krita 3.2.0 today! Compared to Krita 3.1.4, released 26th of May, there are numerous bug fixes and some very cool new features. Please test this release, so we can fix bugs before the final release," reads the release announcement. "It’s a beta, so there are bugs."

The interaction with the file dialog was improved as well, and dozens of smaller bugs that were reported since the Krita 3.1 series have been squashed. If you want to get a first look at Krita 3.2, you can download the Beta 1 release right now for GNU/Linux, macOS, and Microsoft Windows operating systems.

Ubuntu Linux users can install Krita as a Snap for the Ubuntu App Store, or they can use the Krita Lime PPA to install the Krita 3.2 Beta 1 release on their supported Ubuntu flavor. The source tarball is also available for download on our website if you want to compile Krita from sources.
