A few moments ago, the development team behind the powerful, free, open-source, and cross-platform Krita digital painting software proudly announced the final release of Krita 3.1.

After being in development for the past few months, Krita 3.1 is now the most advanced version of the application, bringing cool new features like full support for Apple's Mac OS X operating system, as well as the ability to render an animation to MKV, GIF, MP4, or OGG files using the FFMpeg multimedia framework.

"Krita 3.1 is the first release that is fully supported on OSX (10.9 and later). The OpenGL canvas works just as well as everywhere else. There might still be OSX-specific bugs, of course! But now is the time for OSX and MacOS fans to use Krita and report any issues they might come across," reads today's announcement.

Also new in Krita 3.1 is a brand-new color selector that can be accessed with the "Dual color" button from the top toolbar and promises to allow users to select HDR colors and colors that are outside the sRGB gamut of their screen. It also supports more accurate color picking from Krita windows and improves palette support.

A curve editor can now be used for animating properties

Other interesting changes implemented in Krita 3.1 is support for animating properties by using a curve editor, a new halftone filter, a stop-based gradient editor, support for loading Scribus XML palettes, a new Eraser Switch Opacity feature, as well as a brand-new brush engine that works great with large canvases.

Soft-proofing was added as well in Krita 3.1 if you want to see how your artwork will look before it is printed, there's now an automated tweening of opacity between frames in an animation, and it's possible to animate the raster content of filter layers and color-code frames in the timeline. Check out the full release notes for all the juicy details.
