The Krita Foundation announced the general availability of the first point release to the Krita 3.1 stable series of the open-source, free, and cross-platform digital painting software.

A major release, Krita 3.1 is the most advanced version of the application featuring full support for Apple's Mac OS X operating system, the ability to render animations to MKV, OGG, MP4, or GIF files through the powerful FFMpeg multimedia backend, a brand-new color selector, a stop-based gradient editor, and much more.

Krita 3.1 didn't have a 3.1.1 release, which means that today's Krita 3.1.2 maintenance update is considered the first in the series. And according to the release announcement, it implements a very exciting new feature, namely support for importing audio files for your animations to help with syncing of music and voices.

"In the demo [at the end of the article], Timothée Giet shows how scrubbing and playback work when working with audio," said the developers. "Audio is not yet available in the Linux AppImages. It is an experimental feature, with no guarantee that it works correctly yet - we need your feedback!"

At the moment, users will be able to import audio files in the MP3, FLAC, OGG Vorbis, and WAV formats. Additionally, Krita 3.1.2 implements a new checkbox in the Render Animation dialog to allow you to add the respective audio file while exporting your animations. We recommend reading the documentation for more information.

New checkbox lets users enable HiDPI

Other noteworthy changes implemented in the Krita 3.1.2 release include a new checkbox in the Settings dialog to allow users to enable support for HiDPI (High Dots Per Inch) displays, removal of the "Export to PDF" functionality, for now, and support for deselecting elements by clicking with any of the available selection tools.

It also updates the Ctrl key continue mode for the Outline Selection tool to allow artists to continue drawing the selection from an arbitrary point when pressing the Ctrl key while using a stylus on a tablet device. Krita 3.1.2 is now available for download for GNU/Linux, macOS, and Microsoft Windows operating systems from our website.
