Today, September 6, 2016, a new version of the Krita open-source digital painting software has been released, build 3.0.1, and it's the first bugfix and feature release for the major Krita 3.0 series.

Release highlights of Krita 3.0.1 include the ability to tweak the Brush settings in the pop-up palette, soft proofing support, which lets you see what your artwork will look like when it's converted to CMYK (Cyan-Magenta-Yellow-Black), as well as various improvements to the mirror tools by adding extra options.

Moreover, there's now a Threshold filter and a Wavelet Decompose plugin, an updated Free Transform tool that lets you quickly flip or rotate your selections and layers, and it looks like the Dockers were improved as well by moving the Histogram area from the layers menu into its own Histogram docker.

"This release already contains the first results of the 2016 Google Summer of Code projects, as well as kickstarter-funded features, the work of new contributors Eugene Ingerman, Nishant Rodrigues, Miroslav Talasek and Laurent Jospin and the work from students mentored by Dmitry: Grigory Tantsev and Alexey Kapustin," say the devs.

Other improvements, many bug fixes

The changes mentioned above are only the biggest new features introduced in the Krita 3.0.1 maintenance update, but it looks like there are numerous other small improvements, such as smarter input boxes that support simple maths, a per-stroke fuzziness sensor, the ability to add Gradient Maps as filter layers, and better Pixel 1 preset.

There's also a new Japanese animation template, a new option that allows you to convert a group into an animated layer, Breeze color themes, support for saving the visibility of the statusbar, the ability to view the previous color in the Advanced Colors Selector docker, and many more, as well as numerous bug fixes that you can see in the official release notes or the video attached below.

As usual, you can download Krita 3.0.1 for GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows operating systems right now via our website. Krita 3.0.1 is currently the most stable and advanced version, so we recommend that you update to it as soon as possible. A new Krita update should be available every six weeks, according to the new release schedule.
