Hackers tried to alter Election Day data

Russian authorities are pointing the finger at a US company based in California for DDOSing and trying to infiltrate their system on the eve of the country's national Election Day.

According to a report in Russia Today, hackers attacked the Kremlin.ru Web portal and the website of the Russian Electoral Commission.

"Yesterday someone attempted to hack our web-site and alter the data there making 50,000 requests per minute," said Vladimir Churov, Chief of the Russian Electoral Commission. "They failed and we have already established the culprit – it’s a company based in San Francisco."

Both attacks were recorded on Sunday, September 13, when Russian citizens went to the polls to elect their local authorities.

Mr. Churov plans to collect all the evidence and forward it to US law enforcement.

In his home country, Churov is often accused of turning a blind eye to the Russian government habit of rigging elections.

Many media outlets see this attack as a way of protest against Putin and his party's strong grip on power.

Trying to induce change by hacking the poll results is not too far-fetched since many hacktivism groups and foreign governments don't see the Russian people freeing themselves from their current conundrum through any other ways.

This week alone, Russian authorities have also been attacked by Chinese hackers targeting their military facilities.
