After a long wait, the Korora 24 GNU/Linux distribution has been released, based, as its version number suggests, on many of the technologies included in the popular Fedora 24 operating system.

Now that the Korora 22 "Selina" release has reached end of life (EOL) status on July 22, 2016, there's no better way to celebrate than by upgrading to the Korora 24 release, which will be supported with security updates, bug fixes, and latest software released for a period of one year, until July 2017.

As many of you have expected, Korora 24 borrows all the goodies from the upstream Fedora repositories, including but not limited to the Linux 4.6 kernel, Cinnamon 3.0, GNOME 3.20, MATE 1.14, and Xfce 4.12 desktop environments, as well as lots of other open source software and the latest GNU/Linux technologies.

However, there are some things that you might like in the Korora 24 release. For starters, the operating system is now being distributed only for 64-bit computers, as it appears to be a trend among GNU/Linux distros to drop support for 32-bit ISO images. Second of all, Korora 24 ships without a KDE Plasma 5 ISO.

"We would dearly love to have a KDE iso ready to go, but we ran into a number of issues and decided to not let this hold up the release of Korora 24. It is possible to upgrade a Korora 23 install of KDE to Korora 24 however there are some settings such as themes may need to be manually set up again," reads the announcement.

If you're running Korora 32-bit on 64-bit hardware, you'll need to reinstall

Another interesting change in the Korora 24 release is that the Pharlap driver manager utility has been deprecated, and it's no longer included, as previously announced by the distribution's developers a few weeks ago. This means that you'll have to manually install graphics drivers via the command-line interface.

You can download Korora 24 Cinnamon, Korora 24 GNOME, Korora 24 MATE, and Korora 24 Xfce editions right now via our website. Because Korora 24 is being distributed only as 64-bit ISOs, you'll need to reinstall the OS if you are using a 32-bit version on a 64-bit PC. More details should be available in the official release announcement.
