On September 18, 2016, Martijn Kaijser had the great pleasure of announcing the release of the second Beta build of the upcoming Kodi 17 "Krypton" open-source and cross-platform media center software.

As expected, Kodi 17 Beta 2 is a bugfix release that addresses many of the issues reported by public beta testers since the previous development milestones. This second Beta version is here exactly one month after the launch of the first Beta, and according to the release notes, it patches issues from both Beta 1 and Alpha 3 builds.

"The changes between Alpha 3 and Beta 2 are mainly limited to minor fixes and under the hood improvements, so for this second beta, we’ll instead take some time to review a few of the really visible changes in Kodi 17," says Martijn Kaijser. "Kodi 17 features a huge amount of work in areas like video playback, live TV and PVR/DVR, the music library, skinning and more."

Here's what's new in Kodi 17 Beta 2

Among the most important changes implemented in Kodi 17 "Krypton" Beta 2, we can mention re-implementation of support for game controllers, which was not functional in previous development releases due to recent code refactoring, along with support for setting deadzones for joypads, more PVR (Personal Video Recorder) usability improvements, as well as better support for Internet streams that include redirects.

The "Could not connect to repository" popup should now function correctly, import of settings from Kodi 14 and previous releases is no longer supported, there's better handling of passthrough audio, a new passthrough audio API from Google's Android 7.0 Nougat mobile operating system has been implemented, and loading of the context menu add-ons should no longer crash the media center.

Last but not least, Kodi 17 Beta 2 updates the de-interlacing settings, adds fallback method for skins that haven't been updated to support the upcoming release, improves HiDPI support on Microsoft Windows operating systems, and implements a new update functionality for both add-ons and skins, which takes place before the app starts.
