Believe it or not, Klaus Knopper is still doing his thing with the KNOPPIX GNU/Linux distribution, which has just been updated to version 7.7.1 to offer users the latest open source software and technologies.

Using newer graphics drivers or desktop software from the Debian GNU/Linux 8 "Jessie," Debian GNU/Linux 9 "Stretch" (Testing), and Debian Sid (Unstable), Knoppix 7.7.1 is powered by the Linux 4.7.9 kernel, which is fully patched against the "Dirty COW" bug and injected with some extra patches, including TCP Stealth, BFQ, Cloop, and AUFS. Both 64- and 32-bit kernel versions are included in KNOPPIX 7.7.1.

"In addition to the 32bit standard kernel, the 64bit version of the same kernel is installed on the DVD edition, supporting systems with more than 4GB of RAM and chroot to 64-bit installations for system rescue tasks. In the DVD version, the bootloader will start the 64bit kernel automatically if a 64bit-capable CPU is detected (if not manually specified otherwise)," reads the release announcement.

Here's what you'll find inside the KNOPPIX 7.7.1 Live DVD

If we're taking a quick look inside the KNOPPIX 7.7.1 Live DVD, we can notice that most of the pre-installed software packages are at their latest versions. There's an up-to-date graphics stack based on X.Org 7.7 and X.Org Server 1.18.1, an experimental 3D window manager powered by Compiz 0.9.12.2, as well as Wine 1.9.20 if you want to run various Windows apps and games.

KNOPPIX 7.7.1 looks like it's using the LXDE desktop environment by default, which ships with the PCManFM 1.2.4 file manager, but users can also choose to run the Live DVD with either the KDE Plasma 5.7.4 (boot option knoppix desktop=kde) or GNOME 3.22 desktops (boot option knoppix desktop=gnome). Apps like Orca 3.20.2, Electrum 2.6.4, and qemu-kvm 2.6 have been included as well.

Among other exciting new features implemented in the KNOPPIX 7.7.1 Live DVD, we can mention experimental Secure Boot and UEFI support and a "boot only" CD image for those who want to boot from CD and not the DVD or USB mediums (can be found in the "KNOPPIX" directory). Additionally, syslinux replaces ms-sys, and the live installer now shows the installation progress in real time. Download KNOPPIX 7.7.1 right now via our website.
