Today, December 29, 2016, the development team behind the KDevelop open-source, free and multiplatform IDE (Integrated Development Environment) software proudly announced the release of the first Beta build of the upcoming KDevelop 5.1 release.

The current stable branch of the application is 5.0.x, and it's already at its third maintenance update, but it looks like the next major version, namely KDevelop 5.1, is open for development. KDevelop 5.1 Beta 1 is now available for public testing (download links are at the end of the article) and promises great new features.

"We are happy to announce the release of KDevelop 5.1 Beta! Tons of new stuff entered KDevelop 5.1, a bigger blog post show-casing all the features in 5.1 will follow when we release the final version," said one of the developers in today's release announcement, which is a recommended read if you want to familiarize yourself with the new features.

LLDB support, Analyzer run mode, and Perforce integration

For now, all we know is that KDevelop 5.1 will feature support for the LLDB next-generation, high-performance debugger thanks to a plugin that teaches the IDE to communicate with the standalone LLDB MI driver (lldb-mi), as well as a brand-new Analyzer run mode implemented as a Menu entry.

The Analyzer run mode contains a collection of actions designed to work with analyzer-like plugins, supporting well-known static analysis tools like Cppcheck, Clang-Tidy, and krazy2, but also the Valgrind debugging and profiling software. KDevelop's debugger framework can be used for GDB and LLDB MI communication.

Last but not least, KDevelop 5.1 promises to offer developers free access to the Perforce proprietary and commercial revision control system, which is integrated into the IDE.
