The Kdenlive development team announced a new stability version of the open-source video editor designed for KDE Plasma desktop environments, Kdenlive 16.12, released as part of the KDE Applications 16.12 software suite.

We've already told you all about the goodies and updated KDE apps that have been included in the final release of the KDE Applications 16.12 software suite for KDE Plasma 5 desktops, but it looks like the Kdenlive video editor got its own announcement, and the changes included in this version are quite interesting.

First off, it appears that Kdenlive 17.04 will be the next major release of the application, as the developers have revealed in the announcement, where they're proud to announce the initial implementation of the Advanced Trimming Tools, which requires them to revamp the timeline a little bit.

"This release marks the first step towards implementing Advanced Trimming Tools which will be introduced in 17.04. For that to happen we are starting a refactoring of the timeline making this feature easier to implement and preventing/fixing corruption issues," read the release notes for Kdenlive 16.12.

Projects and Library improvements, new effects, and much more

The list of new features continues with a bunch of enhancements to the Projects component, among which we can mention support for custom cache folders and improvements to portable projects. On the other hand, the Library component got a couple of changes too, especially for handling of image sequences and library clips with multiple tracks.

Apart from that, Kdenlive 16.12 ships with a new rotoscoping effect, a user interface for the LUT3D effect, a parameter to vidstab, an improved motion tracker, an OGG render profile, support for downloading render profiles, title templates, and wipes directly from within the app, support for extracting single frames to the project bin, as well as a context menu option for setting the icon size in the timeline.

Last but not least, it appears that the Breeze icon theme is now used by default for the graphical user interface of Kdenlive, it is possible to define the automatic property of transitions, there's a new status bar toggle button for controlling whether newly created transitions will be non-automatic or automatic, and a total of 113 reported bugs have been fixed.
