Now that the second maintenance update to the KDE Applications 16.12 software suite for KDE Plasma desktops arrived, it's time for the Kdenlive developers to tell us all about the new features implemented in Kdenlive 16.12.2.

From the release notes, it looks like Kdenlive 16.12.2 is a small bugfix release adding a total of 20 changes, as the development team is currently concentrating all of their efforts on the refactoring of the timeline with its highly anticipated professional-grade feature and an extra layer of stability.

The most important fixes appear to be related to certain Nvidia GPUs as the application was reported to crash quite often during startup because of some bugs in the MOVIT GPU-side effect processing library. Moreover, the “Fix warning about QOffscreenSurface thread” bug has been reverted.

Among other improvements, we can mention that slideshow clips are no longer displayed as invalid when re-opening a project, the folder from where a frame is extracted is now remembered, and a new option has been added to allow users to add custom mime types for supported clips.

A workaround is now available for that nasty timeline crash

Some of you reported timeline crashes when attempting to edit a title clip, which was caused by an MLT issue, and a workaround is now available. The project archiving functionality was improved to correctly detect color clip, as well as to warn users before they overwrite existing project files.

Various aspect ratio issues were addressed as well in Kdenlive 16.12.2, and you don't have to select title clips twice to be able to move them. Additionally, the play action should now be automatically paused when the user switches between subclips. Some stability improvements have been implemented too.

You can find the full changelog attached below if you're curious to know what exactly was changed in Kdenlive 16.12.2, which you can download right now from our website as a source tarball that needs to be compiled on your GNU/Linux distribution. Kdenlive 16.12.2 is usually distributed along with the KDE Applications 16.12.2 software suite on your Linux OS.
