It was recently brought to our attention that the KDE developers are hard at work these days preparing a new user interface (UI) for mobile devices running on top of the Ubuntu Touch and Kubuntu operating system, as well as on the next-generation Wayland display server.

We all know that, just like GNOME, KDE always tried to bring its desktop environment to mobile devices, such as smartphone and tablets, since five years ago during the development of the KDE 4 user interfaces. According to the new facts, it would appear that they are secretly working on a touch-based mobile shell.

What we know so far about the new Plasma Phone mobile UI from KDE is that it is powered by the latest KDE technologies and it runs on top of the Wayland display server, it is based on and fully compatible with the Kubuntu and Ubuntu Touch operating systems, and it supports click apps, KDE native apps, and Android apps via Shashlik.

"KDE developers are working on the Plasma Phone, a touch based UI/mobile shell designed for mobile devices, in that case phones. As you may know Plasma 5 was created to support different form factors (desktop, media center etc), so Plasma Phone uses standard KDE libraries and … Wayland," reads KDEOK's Google+ post.

It will support QML/Qt and GTK+ based apps

At the moment, there are a few applications made for Plasma Phone, such as a simple camera app, a Samegame clone, a demo web browser, a Settings app, various useful scripts and tools, several modules for phone functionality, and a complete Plasma workspace. It will also be possible to run QML/Qt-based and GTK-based apps as well.

Most of the development is transparent and it takes place in the KDE's git repositories for AMR and AMD64 devices. Below, you can watch a short video of KDE's Plasma Phone mobile user interface in action, which is currently in pre-alpha development stage. Special thanks to KDEOK for making all the above information public!
