As expected, today KDE announced the availability of the fifth maintenance update to the current stable, yet short-lived KDE Plasma 5.9 desktop environment for GNU/Linux operating systems, versioned 5.9.5.

KDE Plasma 5.9.5 is here more than a month after the release of the KDE Plasma 5.9.4 update, which most probably many of you use on your favorite GNU/Linux distributions. But the time has come to update your installations to KDE Plasma 5.9.5, the last point release in the series, adding more than 60 improvements across various components.

"Today KDE releases a bugfix update to KDE Plasma 5, versioned 5.9.5. Plasma 5.9 was released in January with many feature refinements and new modules to complete the desktop experience. This release adds a month's worth of new translations and fixes from KDE's contributors. The bugfixes are typically small but important," reads today's announcement.

KDE Plasma 5.10 planned for the end of May 2017

Among the components that received attention in the KDE Plasma 5.9.5 maintenance release, we can mention the KWin window manager, Plasma Discover package manager, Plasma Desktop, Plasma Workspace, Plasma Networkmanager (plasma-nm), KScreen screen management software, Milou dedicated search app, as well as the libksysguard library, Plasma SDK, and kde-cli-tools.

There are many improvements, but the ones highlighted in the release notes are that the Plastik window decoration now supports global menu, it's possible to sort themes in decoration KCM, and the Media Controller can now properly handle and seek tracks longer than 30 minutes. The complete changelog is attached below for your reading pleasure.

While you'll have to keep an eye on the stable repositories of your favorite Linux distro for the new KDE Plasma 5.9.5 packages, the KDE developers are working hard on the next major release of the popular desktop environment, KDE Plasma 5.10, which is scheduled to land at the end of May, on the 30th, but a Beta version should hit the streets on May 11, 2017.
